What Hybrid Cars Should You Avoid Buying?

Some hybrids, like the 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid and 2014 and 2015 Nissan Pathfinder HEV, have had major issues with their transmission and braking systems, respectively.

The 2011-2015 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid has faced recalls due to a lack of drainage under the battery, which can cause short circuits and potential fires. This issue was identified as a serious safety concern, as it could lead to the vehicle catching fire. Another safety concern was a missing clip for the brake pedal pivot pin, which could cause the brake pedal to pop out, potentially leading to accidents.

Despite positive aspects like spacious interiors and good fuel economy, hybrid models like the 2018 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid and 2018 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid have been significantly affected by recalls and issues with their hybrid batteries, electrical systems, and engine misfires, raising concerns about their overall reliability.

Not all hybrid cars are created equal. While some models offer excellent fuel efficiency, reliability, and performance, others do not. For instance, the Toyota Prius and Honda Insight are known for their excellent fuel efficiency and reliability, while the Ford Escape Hybrid and Nissan Pathfinder HEV have had major issues with their transmission and braking systems, respectively. Separating the good from the bad can be difficult with so many options.

2020 Ford Escape Hybrid

The 2020 Ford Escape Hybrid is a fuel-efficient SUV that delivers great fuel economy, but it's also been reported to have some significant issues.

Transmission problems in SUVs are among the most common. Owners reported experiencing harsh, sudden shifts; some had to rebuild or replace the entire transmission.

2014 and 2015 Nissan Pathfinder HEV

"Pathfinder hybrid models from these years had problems with their braking systems and electrical problems," Geranda said. "Some owners reported less braking response, a major safety concern. Additionally, electrical faults in the infotainment and navigation systems were common, detracting from the vehicle's overall reliability.

Owners have reported several other common issues with the Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, including shuddering and shaking when shifting. There were also reports of the car not accelerating after the panic stop.

2011-2015 Volkswagen Touareg Hybrid

This hybrid was a draw for its speed, but the severity of the summons could have been a better trade-off. The main problem was a lack of drainage under the battery, resulting in short circuits and, in some cases, catching fire. VWProblems states, "Water identified by Volkswagen could enter without opening the rear hatch because the sunroof drains and rear lid seals were not properly assembled."

Additionally, there was a recall for a missing clip of the brake pedal pivot pin that allowed the brake pedal to pop out and another for a leak in the fuel injection system.

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid 2018

The Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid is the only hybrid minivan on the market. Despite its practicality and above-average EV range, it has been reported to have several recalls and issues with its hybrid battery. However, it's worth noting that Chrysler has proactively addressed these issues, with all affected vehicles being repaired or replaced under warranty.

Another issue commonly reported by owners is the electrical system, which can be a major concern given the vehicle's hybrid nature.

2018 Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid

Owners love the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu for its spacious interior and excellent fuel economy. However, some owners have reported engine malfunctions, fuel sensor problems, and low power issues, which can lead to dangerous situations on the road. It's important to note that these issues are relatively rare, with only a small percentage of owners reporting them.

Additionally, there have been six recalls for the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu, including one due to a transmission fluid leak. Despite some positive reviews, the consensus points to reliability issues with this car.

2017 BMW X5 Hybrid

The 2017 BMW X5 Hybrid is a luxury SUV with strong performance and a luxurious cabin. According to Edmunds reviews, the car offers a comfortable ride and sporty handling. However, owners have reported brake issues, such as a pulsating or vibrating feeling, antilock system and caliper problems, squealing, and brake failure. If you're considering this model, it's recommended to have the brakes checked regularly and to be aware of the signs of brake failure.
