A shooting near a high school in a Philadelphia suburb has injured five high school soccer team members, local police said.

The shooting occurred on Fairway Terrace near Roxborough High School around 4:30 p.m., in the suburb of Roxborough.

Police said at a news conference that three student victims were taken to nearby Einstein Medical Center and a fourth to Temple University Hospital.

The three who rushed to Einstein were said to be stable.

Investigators say five young Roxboro school players were walking outside the school's soccer field when at least two gunmen opened fire from their Ford Explorer with a hail of bullets.

The teenage victim was shot and later died of his injuries, according to police, while two of his colleagues, aged 14 and 17, were shot and taken to nearby Einstein Medical Center in stable condition.

Officers said a fourth player was injured but did not require medical treatment.

The case of the fifth victim, who was also taken to hospital, was not released.

Christina Clark, a spokeswoman for the Philadelphia School District, said the victim who died was a soccer player for the Roxboro team but attended Saul High School near the magnet.

Police initially got to the scene by car around 4:30 p.m. in response to reports of the shooting on 6,400 Ridge Avenue, where the school is located.

Officers arrived to find two young men, aged 14 and 17, and another victim with gunshot wounds, according to preliminary information from the Philadelphia Police Department.

The 14-year-old who eventually died was hit in the chest.
