Moderna develops COVID-19 formula, a flu booster dose

Moderna announced Thursday that it is developing a new vaccine that combines a booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine with the seasonal flu vaccine.

"We believe this is just the beginning of a new era of information-based medicine," CEO Stefan Bancel said in the press release, who also provided a slew of updates about the projects the company seeks to pursue.

The first step today in our new respiratory vaccine program with the development of a single-dose vaccine that combines a booster against COVID-19 and a booster against influenza," Bancel said.

According to Reuters, the company has several flu vaccine candidates in development, and the booster will combine the version further into effect with an already existing COVID-19 vaccine.

Moderna also said it was developing a vaccine for the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and provided updates on public COVID-19 booster vaccine trials.

CNBC reported that Moderna's shares jumped more than 5% after the announcement.
