Walmart gives employees a deadline to get the COVID-19 vaccine

Walmart has given a deadline for corporate and department-wide employees to get vaccinated against COVID-19. This declaration came on the same day that The Walt Disney Company announced that it would also require salaried and non-union employees in the United States to get the vaccine by a specific deadline. Walmart also doubled the bonus incentive for getting vaccinated.

Walmart's home office associations and market, county, and department employees will have to be vaccinated against the coronavirus by October 4. The country's largest private employer will continue to monitor the situation before deciding whether its plans need to change. For now, Walmart hopes to get employees close to pre-pandemic levels after Labor Day, Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said.

"We want to have a place where we can use our offices and be together safely," McMillion wrote in the note. "It's important to our business, our culture, our speed, and our innovation." Walmart has also doubled the incentives for employees in its stores to get the vaccine, from $75 to $150. Walmart said employees who have already been vaccinated and received a $75 bonus would receive an additional $75 on their paycheck on August 19.

The company also announced that it would require store employees in high-risk US counties to immediately wear face masks, even if the employee has been vaccinated, CNBC reports. According to another company memo, shoppers will be strongly encouraged to wear masks in stores, but not required. The list of high-risk counties will follow the latest classifications from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"Customers are strongly encouraged to wear masks, but this is not required," Walmart said in a statement to USA Today. The masking requirement is "not applicable to employees" in all stores. Managers will refer to the CDC website for updates related to their district every Monday. Conditions will also be available for Sam's Club stores.

Walmart began requiring all customers and employees to wear masks in July 2020, but the mandate was rescinded in May when the CDC said fully vaccinated people could go without masks in most cases. However, the CDC updated its mask guidelines earlier this week to help slow the spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus. Fully vaccinated people are asked to wear masks indoors in counties with "high" and "high" COVID-19 transmission. Nearly two-thirds of all counties fall under these classifications.

Publix also announced that all store employees, regardless of their vaccination status, will be required to wear face coverings starting August 2. Kroger now encourages all individuals to wear a mask in their stores. "In light of variable delta and updated CDC recommendations, we strongly encourage all individuals, including those who have been vaccinated, to wear a mask when in our stores and facilities," Krueger said in a statement. "We will continue to adhere to all states and local states and encourage all Americans to get vaccinated, including our partners."
