Nationalization of the Panama Canal

By Sameh Selim, a member of the United States Press Agency

The decision of the President of the Republic to nationalize the Panama Canal Company, an American joint-stock company

The past is very similar to the present when the late President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal, despite the difference in time and the difference in the method of nationalization. The time of military power differs from the time of economic power or ability. Military nationalization is always based on military power and is different from economic nationalization, which is currently based on buying and selling or common economic interests. This ancient era, with its purely military beliefs, has gone, and our contemporary era has come with new concepts based on the economic and financial power of the state to dominate and control, or what is known as economic nationalization without mobilizing any military force. This is what the current US President Donald Trump, and Senator Marco Rubio did when they pushed giant American companies from the private sector to buy ports located at the entrances and exits of the Panama Canal for approximately $ 20 billion. With this economic and strategic cunning, American companies took control of the important ports on the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, thus controlling the canal economically and strategically simultaneously. Military power has now become used to defend interests and rights, and it is not permissible to expand or overuse it except in certain and very limited cases. Political wisdom and economic mentality are now required in light of the new world order and the successive economic crises our contemporary world is experiencing.
