Severe weather: Winter storms sweep 49 US states

LIVE WEATHER UPDATES: Winter storms threaten millions across the United States with the potential for flooding, tornadoes and snow

49 states are under weather warnings

At least three tornadoes were reported in Florida, the National Weather Service said.

A massive winter storm is expected to blow across a wide swath of the United States on Tuesday, bringing heavy snow and blizzards from the Plains to the Great Lakes and heavy rain and high winds to the Northeast — parts of which are still being dredged up from the past a weekend that dropped more A foot of snow in some areas. The same system brings heavy rain, hail, and the threat of tornadoes to areas in the south.

According to the National Weather Service, a second storm will produce snowy conditions across the Pacific Northwest.

Declaring states of emergency

North Carolina and New Jersey declared states of emergency as heavy rains and strong winds hit the mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions, potentially leading to flash flooding and power outages.

In North Carolina, officials announced they would waive "truck weight, size and hours of service so that vehicles carrying essential supplies such as food, medicine or fuel or transporting livestock and crops can get their jobs done quickly."

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy announced that the state's order will go into effect at 5 p.m. Tuesday in all 21 counties. If the storm persists, the order allows resources to be deployed throughout New Jersey.
