COVID-19 updates: Over 10,000 new deaths were reported in the US in one week

The United States faces an increase in the spread of COVID-19 this summer with the space of the most contagious delta variant.

More than 672,000 Americans have died of COVID-19. In contrast, more than 4.6 million people have died of the disease worldwide,

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data, only 63.6% of kids age 12 and older are fully vaccinated.

Dr. Anthony Fauci defended the White House's plan to provide booster shots for the COVID-19 vaccine before the Food and Drug Administration voted to give those shots to Americans 65 and older who are immunocompromised.

Fauci told ABC's "This Week" anchor Martha Radatz that he was not disappointed with the committee's decision and believed the process worked.

When pressed on whether the president's premature announcement would confuse Americans, Fauci said people need to understand that such decisions depend on science and approvals by the appropriate health agencies.
