In some states, homes are cheap, property tax rates are less than half of 1%, and the average property tax payment is a few hundred dollars a year. In the most expensive states, however, prices rise more than 2%, homes are very expensive, and average annual property tax bills routinely creep up to $10,000 annually.

Using data from the Tax Foundation, GOBankingRates has ranked the states with the highest property taxes in America, including percentage, average dollar amount paid, and median home value. We've ranked the top 15 from least expensive to most. For context, the national average effective property tax is 1.04%, the average home value in the US is $349,015, and the average annual property tax bill is $3,630. 15. Kansas

The average annual property tax paid: $2,778

Kansas property taxes are low compared to the others on this list but still considered high compared to the rest of the United States.

13. New York

New York ties with Michigan for the states with the highest property taxes, though New York, at $1,966, is much higher. The median home value is also slightly higher in New York than in other states, but its residents still pay a relatively low property tax rate.

Michigan is tied with New York for No. 13; although property taxes and home values differ greatly, they share a property tax rate of 1.38%.

New England ranks three on this list, with a property tax rate of roughly 2% in New Hampshire. The median home price is also the second most expensive on this list, and annual property taxes are the second highest in the country.

Illinois may be the first state to crack 2% in its property tax rate, but because of its low median home value, annual taxes here won't make homeowners' banks crash.
