A section of Route 1 in Virginia remains closed due to a standoff between police and an armed woman.
A section of the Richmond Highway in Fairfax County, Virginia, has been closed for more than 20 hours as police negotiate with an armed woman who has barricaded herself in a car after a brief chase.
Route 1 has been closed in both directions for several blocks between Boswell Ave and Lockheed Boulevard in the Hybla Valley area since about 11 a.m. Tuesday.
"This closure will affect rush hour traffic," Fairfax County Police said in a tweet, and drivers should avoid the area. Alternate routes include Interstate 95, George Washington Parkway, and Virginia Route 611.
As the sun rose on Wednesday, at the intersection of Route 1 and Arlington Drive, dozens of police officers tried to coax the woman out of her car, pleading that they wanted her help and needed to get out of her car with her hands up and empty.
They played recorded messages from loved ones saying they loved her no matter what and asked her to cooperate with the officers.
Police said on Tuesday that the woman had a gun and suffered a psychological crisis. When officers arrived on the scene, she locked herself inside the car.
