Texas man, 40, 'set his house on fire, killed his 54-year-old brother, and injured his 82-year-old mother

Philip Daniel Mills, 40, of El Paso, allegedly set his home on fire Thursday night, killing his brother and seriously injuring his 82-year-old mother.

An affidavit says Mills, who is facing charges of murder and arson, told police that he did so because his brother and mother did not follow the Bible.

According to criminal records, he was charged with previous charges that include criminal trespass and evasion of arrest.

Mills was booked into a prison in downtown El Paso on Friday afternoon with a bond of $2.5 million.

Philip Daniel Mills, 40, of El Paso, allegedly confessed to police that he set fire to his Fandango Place residence to "cleanse the house of evil" because his brother and mother did not follow the Bible.

According to the affidavit of arrest, Mills doused his living room sofa in gasoline that was suctioned from the weed eater before igniting it with a lighted cloth, KTSM reports.

The El Paso Fire Department said firefighters arrived at the house around 11:30 p.m. to see Mills' mother, Florence Annette Mills, rushing outside with a severe burn.
