Mother, 20 years old, was shot dead while walking her three-month-old in New York
A mother was shot and killed in a shocking, rapid attack while pushing her child into a pram on the Upper East Side of New York City.
Officials said the killing occurred at about 8.23 p.m. on a sidewalk at the intersection of Lexington Avenue and 95th Street, steps away from a playground filled with children.
New York Police Commissioner Kishant Sewell told reporters that the 20-year-old victim was walking with her three-month-old baby when the shooter approached her and "fired a single shot in the head at very close range."
Police said the killer fled immediately on foot, heading east on East 95th Street.
The woman was taken to the nearby Metropolitan Hospital, where she died within an hour. The child was also taken to the hospital for evaluation but was unharmed.
Officials investigate domestic violence as a possible motive but have not yet confirmed such a link.
In comments to reporters, New York Mayor Eric Adams criticized the "excessive proliferation of guns and their accessibility."
"There is no fear that these weapons will be used against innocent New Yorkers, and that's a consequence," said Adams, a Democrat who took office last January under a program to reduce violent crime.
