Europe's largest nuclear power plant burns after the Russian bombing
According to the mayor of a nearby industrial city, Europe's largest nuclear power plant caught fire after Russian forces began bombing it early Friday.
Energodar Mayor Dmytro Orlov had previously said that a column of soldiers could be seen heading towards the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, according to Reuters. He reported that Ukrainian forces were fighting with the Russians on the city's outskirts, saying that "thunderous shots" could be heard.
In a video clip posted on Telegram, a factory official confirmed that the Russians had started bombing the station.
"We demand that the cease-fire with heavy weapons," spokesman Andre Toze said in the video. "There is a big threat of nuclear danger at Europe's largest atomic power plant."
In a frantic statement on Twitter, Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba confirmed that Russian forces were firing "from all sides."
"If it exploded, it would be ten times bigger than Chernobyl!" He wrote referring to the 1986 nuclear disaster at Chernobyl. "The Russians should stop shooting immediately, let the firefighters go, and set up a security zone!"
Shortly after the invasion began last Thursday, Russian forces captured the defunct Chernobyl station north of the capital, Kyiv.
