Officials said that a police officer and a campus safety officer were killed  yesterday during a shooting at a Virginia college after responding to reports of a "suspicious" person on campus.

A "suspicious man" called the two officers on the college memorial hall grounds, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corinne Geller. After a short interaction, she added that the suspect opened fire, injuring the two officers.

Officials said the suspect was arrested about half an hour outside the campus. Geller said officers followed the suspect after he waded into the North River on an island in the river and took him into custody without incident.

Bridgewater spokesman Logan Buger confirmed to ABC News that the two officers died of their injuries. The college president identified them as Campus Police Officer Jon Pinter and Campus Safety Officer J. Jefferson.

"Today, the campus community witnessed an unspeakable tragedy. Two members of the Bridgewater College family were taken without reason and violence," said David Bushman, president of Bridgewater College, in a statement.

Bushman said the two officers were known as the "dynamic couple" and were close friends. The painter was Jefferson's best man at his wedding.
