United States urges Americans to 'reconsider' travel to Canada due to the 'high level' of COVID cases

ON MONDAY, the US State Department declared a warning to people hoping to visit Canada shortly, urging them to "reconsider" that the country faces a "high level" of infections.

The second-highest level across the agency says unvaccinated travelers should avoid non-essential travel to Canada or ensure they are fully vaccinated before doing so.

In recent weeks, the number of new COVID-19 cases in Canada has been on a "path of a strong return." The national average of new cases reported daily for seven days between August 20 and August 26 was close to 2,850, the agency said in a statement, up 29% from the previous week.

According to the statement, the worrying mutation includes "mainly" unvaccinated people, with the highly contagious delta variant accounting for most new infections.

Meanwhile, multiple states in the US are facing another wave of new cases and hospitalizations, including Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, and Texas.

Nationally, the seven-day rolling average of new daily cases has been close to 130,000 over the past week, slightly lower than the past two weeks but still higher than every week since early February, according to the CDC.

The severe health crisis has led the European Union to recommend banning Americans from non-essential travel to its member states.
