By Sakhshi Sharma: Speaker Pelosi Questions President's Authority on Student Loan Forgiveness

Whether college, public or private, students tend to spend their entire lives paying off loans. Due to the pandemic, students have been hit significantly to the extent that repayment has become an ongoing impediment. Nonetheless, most Democrats are constantly back, forgiving student debt in one way or another.

While some Democrats—Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer persuade President Biden to take immediate action on canceling student debt, the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi stated at a weekly conference, "People think that the President of the United States has the power for debt forgiveness; he does not." However, Speaker Pelosi gives a sense of understanding to the public by providing knowledge that only Congress has the power to cancel student debt. She later reinforced that by asserting, "He can defer, he can defer, but he doesn't have that authority. It should be a business of Congress."

Just like in most cases, the contrasting opinions of the people are taken into account. Therefore, in the debate of canceling student debt, Republicans are saying that it is not their responsibility to pay off the debt of numerous students as it will be through taxes. Moreover, aside from the various debates, Speaker Pelosi has declared her statement.
