The Pharaohs' Joy for Their Children

By Sameh Selim- Member of the United States Press Agency

The Pharaohs, the sons of the Nile, are once again reasserting their place on the international stage at the United Nations. This is not the first time Egypt has achieved such global distinction. The first remarkable moment was when the late Professor Boutros Boutros-Ghali assumed the position of Secretary-General of the United Nations, leaving behind an enduring international legacy and a distinguished personal mark within one of the world’s highest organizations. Through his leadership, he opened doors for Egypt, Africa, and the Arab world, elevating Egyptian diplomacy with his professionalism and dedication to political and diplomatic service—beginning with the African continent, which he viewed as the cornerstone for achieving long-term global goals. Many new diplomats shy away from serving in the poorest African nations, yet it is often through such challenging paths that true success is achieved. This reflection on the past serves as a reminder that today’s triumphs are built upon yesterday’s accomplishments.

Now, the Pharaohs’ joy continues with Dr. Khaled El-Enany’s sweeping nomination for the position of Director-General of UNESCO—an honor not only for Egypt but also for the entire African continent. The former Minister of Tourism and Antiquities is a distinguished figure whose extensive knowledge, multilingual fluency, and impressive record of achievements, both within Egypt and internationally, make him a fitting candidate for this esteemed role.

This moment of pride coincides beautifully with the long-awaited opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum—a monumental project that Dr. El-Enany played a crucial role in bringing to life. His deep understanding of ancient Egyptian civilization and his contributions to preserving its legacy have left an indelible mark on Egypt’s modern history.

This time, the Pharaohs will once again rejoice in the success of one of their own—celebrating both the leadership of Egypt at UNESCO and the grand unveiling of the world’s greatest tribute to its ancient civilization.
