First Lady Jill Biden traveled to Japan to represent the United States at the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on Friday.
As head of the US participation at the Tokyo Games, Jill Biden's role marks her first solo foreign trip for the first lady.

"Your whole nation is cheering you on," Biden said in an open letter to athletes published by NBC. "we are grateful for what you have given us: the opportunity to come together in awe and shared appreciation for your accomplishments and the shared joy of rooting our country on the edge of our seats."
Jill Biden arrived in Tokyo on Thursday, awaiting a busy itinerary.
Upon her arrival, Biden had dinner with Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga and his wife. On Friday, she met Japanese Emperor Naruhito.
Tonight Biden ended his appearance at the Olympic Stadium as head of the US delegation.
Other responsibilities of the First Lady include setting aside a room at the United States Embassy in Tokyo and hosting a softball game between the United States and Mexico.
COVID-19 looms large during the Games, and several athletes have had to withdraw after testing positive. At least five were from Team USA.
According to the White House, Biden was vaccinated and tested between her trip from Anchorage, Alaska, to Tokyo.
